On Friday, Col. John Kaminar of the Arkansas Department of Education DESE presented banners to Goza Principal Tisha Hunter, AHS Principal Callie Hunley, APSD Military Education Coordinator Jeremy Bell, and Superintendent Nikki Thomas in recognition of our district's two Purple Star Schools. The banners will be displayed at each of the two schools. The district received notice in March of the Purple Star School status.

It has been a great day filled with orientations and open houses. Thank you to everyone who came to meet their teachers and to our school staff who worked so hard to prepare for this day. It was extra special seeing our K-2 students enter the new Peake Elementary School for the very first Open House.

Some of our rising 5th/6th Grade Quiz Bowl Students joined our Back-to-School Celebration to take on adults in a round of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” The adults hung in there but the seven students pulled out the win! Thank you to the students and their families for coming and our willing adult participants. We also appreciate Quiz Master Steve Patterson and the adults who helped make it happen. Fun!

We are just getting started sharing "thank yous" to many people and organizations who helped bring some good food, fun, and prizes to the event. A group of our PLC Leaders from throughout the district traveled to Austin, Texas last week. They participated in great training at the High-Impact Teams in a PLC at Work Institute. Our PLC teams keep moving forward!

In the July Arkadelphia School Board meeting, a special presentation was made by Mr. Michael Ankton, Goza Middle School Social Studies Teacher and Clark County Justice of the Peace District 2. Mr. Ankton presented a Capitol Citation that was issued by Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston. The Citation recognizes the legacy of the late John Edward Peake, former Sloan School Principal in Arkadelphia. Peake Elementary School was built on land once owned by J. Ed. Peake and the school has borne his name for nearly a century. The Citation was given to the current Peake Elementary School Principal Mary Snowden and Assistant Principal Leah Clark.
