The sixth-grade students at Goza participated in a field trip to the Little Rock Central High National Historic Site. Little Rock Central High was the first high school to need federal assistance to integrate. The first nine African American students to enroll are now known as the Little Rock Nine. Goza students were escorted on a ranger-led program to view the park’s many exhibits. They engaged in an interactive museum tour and then learned about the Magnolia Mobile Gas Station where newspaper reporters from around the world and protesters gathered. Students learned in-depth information about the school’s history and the struggles of nine African American students who left an indelible mark on the nation’s history. Students ended the tour by eating lunch on the lawn of the Commemorative Garden located across from the school. It is here that nine benches were placed and nine trees were planted to honor the Little Rock Nine and their heroism in spite of adversity.

It was a special morning at Perritt Primary School during the Character Kid Awards Assembly. The first-ever “Joy Like Janilah” Awards were presented in honor of Janilah Shantelle Williams who would have been a second grader this year at Perritt. These students were nominated by their teachers because they express and bring the same joy that Janilah did in her short life. It was an honor to have Janilah’s family present for the presentations.
February’s Character Kid Award-Kindness winners were also recognized during the assembly. Kindness matters.
